The Karl-Marx-Monument is a 7.10m-tall stylized head of Karl Marx, weighing approximately 40 tons. The heavy-duty sculpture, together with the base platform, stand over 13 meters tall.

On a wall behind the monument, the phrase “Workers of the world, unite!” (from the Communist Manifesto) is written in four languages: German, English, French and Russian.

It is the most famous monument in the inner city of Chemnitz and the second-largest bust in the world, after the 60 cm higher Lenin‘s head in Ulan-Ude, Russia. There is a well known local nickname for the monument: “Nischel”, which is derived from the Central German term for head or skull.
